I live in the Niagara region in Ontario right now, I am getting my information from the Local newspaper, Welfare is paid out of city taxes, and the farmers who pay taxes to pay the welfare have a standing order that is never filled for workers. In the spring the workers prune and spray, in the summer they spray and pick strawberries then cherries, then peaches and plums, then apples and grapes.
The part of my property tax that includes welfare keeps rising, But there is a massive problem that here anyway, people on welfare are doing better than the working poor. Because we have several hundred men with no wives or girlfriends here all summer, they form relationships with the local girls and we end up with a new crop of welfare mothers each year. Because the Fathers are returned to their home countries each fall, there is no hope of child support, and the girls are left to fend for themselves.
Often after 3 or 4 years they end up with 3 or 4 children, and then the worker for some reason or other stops coming to Ontario. There is an increasing tax burden with literally no taxes to support it. The whole migrant worker program is thus working in the short term, but on a long term is providing hundreds of dysfunctional single parent families with no hope of reunification and little hope of overcoming the welfare trap. |
