Hi Gottfried,

I did try Google, and came up with many positive hits. It seems that the "shut down" problem is common in XP. In fact, Microsoft admits their is/was a problem. The indicated that the Service Packs fixed the problem.

However, my problem was caused by the deletion of McAfee's Antispam program. The uninstall process let some files on my hard drive. One of the files was in my Start Files that you find when you go into MSConfig. Once I found the problem, I unchecked the box and restarted my computer. It shut down without hanging. I believe the computer hung because it was looking to close down the McAfee program. Of course, it could not find the program, so the shut down process just hung up.

This is a great example of Dell, and other PC Manufacturing loading up the computer with all sorts of programs that many people don't want. So, when the customer uninstalls the programs, they run into these problems. Very time consuming and a many source of frustration to the customer.

Well, that's the story. I came very close to returning the notebook to Dell and telling them to "stick it".
