They came to help a government that had put it self in place by a coup. Than they decided that they didn't like that government so they engineered another coup and put a puppet government in place.

The armed opposition to the Soviet involvement wasn't created by the US, neither was the Islamic radical part of it. The opposition was greatly assisted by the US, but it was already "lit", at very worst you could say we fanned the flames a bit, or more accurately you could say the ISI did, partly with our money. Al qaeda as such didn't develop until years later in response to the presence of US soldiers in Saudi, and part of what became Al Qaeda was the "Egyptian Islamic Jihad" which didn't develop because of Afghanistan.
