For most of the early times in America, most families had LOTS of children. There are many reasons, but one for sure was, most of the families were farmers and supported their family that way, selling anything extra. They needed extra hands to help with the crops. Therefore, lots of children.

Plus many of the kids died before the age of 10. I have several family lines where there were 10-12 children. Many of those kids died early. One family in the 1890's had 4 of their 6 kids die of dyptheria within 4 months!!! Their Mom never fully recovered. Never left the ranch after that, unless it was an emergency. We have pictures of the young children, and they were so beautiful, and the letter from Mom to her Mother telling of their death. Incredibly sad.

Another line of parents had 3 children. Mom dies after the 3rd one, when he was about 15 months old. The Dad married her unmarried sister, and she raised those 3 kids, plus six of the 2nd marriage. All survived childhood....
