I think he was just being an iconoclast, since in traditional mainstream culture they are right up there with mom, the flag, and apple pie.
I do recall ramblings about mindless time-wasting activities from him..but frankly his classes were a blight, if you ask me :)
I do recall one of the principles however: Diminishing returns. It seemed the more of his classes I attended, the less I got out of them.
