Sharia law decision opposed by religious groups

By David F. Dawes

REPRESENTATIVES of some of Canada's major faiths are united -- in opposition to a decision just announced by one of Canada's premiers.

"There will be no sharia law in Ontario," Dalton McGuinty declared September 11.

Strict Islamic law, however, is not the only thing which will be affected by his government's policy. Speaking to the Canadian Press, he added: "There will be no religious arbitration in Ontario." Such arbitrations, he said, "threaten our common ground."

McGuinty said his government intends to provide "one law for all Ontarians. [They] will always have the right to seek advice from anyone in matters of family law, including religious advice. But no longer will religious arbitration be deciding matters of family law."

According to The National Post, legislation will be introduced later this year, outlawing the use of religious tribunals.

McGuinty's announcement came after international protests over the proposed implementation of sharia law in Ontario. Demonstrations were held recently in various Canadian cities, as well as London, Paris, Amsterdam and Dusseldorf. Protesters maintained that sharia discriminates against women.
