I don't understand, why is your Dad too old to go to India or Thailand for knee surgery? Granted it's a long flight but if he's in such pain, why not go? It'll be much less costly there than in Canada even if he could get it and they'd throw in a luxury vacation.

There are an estimated 100K-200K people who ARE KILLED DUE TO MEDICAL MALPRACTICE in the US. Lousy doctors are available to you the world over.

If you want an anecdote, a patient was given too much ASPIRIN because this very expensive doctor failed to consider his size. He went into aspirin shock and went to the emergency room. He almost died.

I didn't know you could OD on aspirin but, apparently, this doctor didn't know either or didn't care on his way to a round of golf.

The amount of money you hand over to someone isn't the only factor in care. If that were the case, we should be living twice as long as everyone else since we pay twice as much for medical care. --- well, ok, you know what I mean.
