On political threads, the more abusive posters treat banning as a rite of martyrdom; they get to post their trash once, and it stays on the thread they were trying to disrupt. Then they run back to their little home clubhouse threads and brag to their buddies about getting banned on someone else's thread.

A delete function would make it much easier for moderators to enforce TOU as they see fit on their own threads. The worst punishment for juvenile attention-seekers is erasing their chances of pissing and moaning on someone else's thread where they knew they weren't wanted from the beginning. That's the whole point to their presence.
