An interesting factoid I was reading about over the weekend is that in the one soft landing the Fed actually managed to engineer in 1994-95 the yield curve didn't invert. Rather long-bond rates rose steeply crashing the bond market. To see whether this is important we would need to find out whether there were any Fed engineered hard landings without a yield curve inversion.
