"Their press has always been much more even handed when reporting on the Israel/Palestine issue."

Less at stake. The Jewish population in northern Europe was thinned out pretty recently and the Catholic church has marginalized them in southern Europe for centuries. So we have a proportionately larger Jewish community that has more influence because, while anti-semitism isn't unknown here, it never was as severe or as institutionalized as it was in Europe. Plus Europe didn't have the geopolitical aspirations that we did in the Middle East. So we were willing to overlook things like the Liberty for political expediency. For such a long time, the Soviets had most of the Middle East under their influence and we only had Israel. So, like we have with Turkey, we have been willing to overlook certain, umm, eccentric behaviors, in the name of The Greater Good.
