Chris Cobb, CanWest News Service; Ottawa Citizen Published: Monday, September 25, 2006 OTTAWA - Stunned family members described accused killer Hasibullah Sadiqi as a ''very polite, nice boy'' shortly after the 20-year-old appeared briefly in court Sunday accused of murdering his sister and attempting to murder her fiance.
Sadiqi surrendered at Ottawa police headquarters early Saturday and was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and use and possession of a firearm.
Sadiqi's sister Khatera, also 20, died of a single gunshot wound while sitting behind the wheel of her car with fiance Feroz Mangal early Tuesday. Mangal, who was shot four times, remains in an Ottawa hospital intensive-care unit.
The shooter fled the scene in a car immediately after the incident.
''I don't understand any of it,'' said the Sadiqis' father Ghulam as he was leaving the Ottawa courthouse with relatives Sunday morning. ''He is very, very polite and nice to everybody. Just yesterday one of his teachers came to see us and said he is '100 per cent a very nice boy.'''
The elder Sadiqi said he has not spoken to Hasibullah since last week's shooting, but said his son is likely scared: ''If you look at the situation, it is very involved,'' he said.
Police had been hunting for Hasibullah Sadiqi for several days but have not said why he was a suspect.
Khatera Sadiqi and Mangal had been engaged for six months and were saving money for their marriage. Mangal, who wants to be a police officer, had been taking criminology classes at Carleton University.
Mangal and his family immigrated to Canada six years ago from Afghanistan.
