In San Antonio I like Tom's Ribs. (Get the baby backs and the sweet potato too). You can get real authentic German food in New Branfels, just north of San Antonio. I like Oma's Haus.

In Houston I usually eat Cajun, especially at Pappadeaux's. It's a chain restaraunt but the Houston version seems better than the other outlets, I think they have cooks from Louisiana. I eat barbeque on the way to Houston, in Lockhart.

I don't get to Dallas too much. For various reasons I usually wind up in Fort Worth. I like to eat steaks at the stockyard.

I frequently stop in small BBQ cafes. They tend to be owner operator type places and each one is a bit different. It may not be suitable for group outings because it's not so predictable. There is usually one dish, maybe the brisket or maybe the cole slaw that keeps these little places in business and maybe some dishes that aren't to my liking. The bigger chains have more depth, but you don't often run across that one special dish that makes the owner proud.

Mmmm, I'm getting hungry. I'm about to take off for Iowa for a week or two. For some reason the cooking in that are has trended to grilled pork tenderloin. It's good meat, but I think they are way too tame with the spices and sauces.

P.S. - When I am at Rudy's I always buy a bottle of their BBQ sauce to take home. It works well on a lot of dishes besides bbq (such as hamburgers, french fries, and a little boost to bottled marinara sauce).
