Chile exports $2.9 billion worth of copper in August, up 76%

9.18.06

Chile exported $2.92 billion worth of copper in August, up 76% from $1.66 billion exported in the same month of last year, the country's central bank said Friday.

But the monthly figure marked a 13% drop from the $3.29 billion worth of exports recorded in July. The world's largest producer of copper, Chile has seen the value of its red metal exports rocket during the last twelve months on the back of record prices and a moderate rise in production.

But August saw copper production hit by both problems at Codelco's Chuquicamata mine and a 25 day long strike at the Escondida mine, operated by BHP Billiton. Official production figures for August are due out at the end of this month.

Meanwhile, exports during the first eight months of the year totaled $20.63 billion, up 82% from $11.35 billion in the same period of last year.
