Intel took a $475 million charge in 1994 on the fp bug.
Since then, the stock price has split two times and about
quadrupled in price. With PII on chip code some bugs can be fixed in
software --free-- before next masking. Intel never makes the same mistake twice.
If fixing software is so easy and cheap, why do we have to wait so
long for Windows 95 and NT to become "bug free" and why do we have
to pay for it. Msft fixes bugs in batches and sells the fix as an upgrade for many dollars.
