I wish someone could explain to me how requiring a passport to re-enter the US from Canada will enhance our security.

They already have the ability to run immediate checks on driver's licenses and mv registrations.

Because licenses are registrations may come from the back alley and, even if legit, do not certify nationality, which is the salient factor.

If they tied the licenses and registrations to a data base that could validate nationality, then the licenses would work and we could save the overhead of passports. Or if licenses were more secure and required proof of citizenship. But otherwise they are not reliable for screening folks entering the country.
