But if things do go bad, how long before this little island off the coast isn't important enuf to get electricity from the grid?

i know - i've thought about that too.

but the way things are set up here, BC Hydro has
a lock on everything. there was a proposal to
install windmills up at rose spit, but it fell
through because the power generated would go
directly to the grid and by-pass the islands.

we seem to be hamstrung at every level.

various marketing boards shut us down from even
producing our own food ie - milk farmers have
quotas. excess milk must be discarded so as not
to flood and market and drive prices down.

a ranch on the island was selling milk and
they got shut down. then they just made it known
locally that they had milk - sort of sitting on the
porch, you know for people to come and get it.
they had to stop doing that too.

fisherman can't sell their catch directly to
restaurants here. all fish has to be inspected
first and there is no inspector on the island, so
it has to be done in vancouver. how stupid
is that for crying out loud? can you imagine
going to the baja and not being able to go to
a local restaurant to enjoy local seafood delicacies?

don't get me started.
