I've often wondered what the U.S. would be like without the conservative influence of the Deep South. If the Civil War had succeeded in spliting the union 150 years ago, then the Northern U.S. would be more like a Canadian/European society with genereous social benefits and the Southern U.S. would be less developed as capital would be limited, and probably be even less socially progressive than it is now (not to say it is terribly progressive right now), with continued racial segreration and harassing of unions and poor public services.
