I assume part of the reason cockpit doors weren't hardened was cost- that's our wonderful capitalist system at work. Our companies aren't going to spend a lot of money to protect the public when they don't have to. Interestingly the same people who don't like government regulation of business, and who rise to sing hymns to capitalism, want the government intruding in our banking and phone systems. Go figure. I say let's make the planes have hardened doors- and whatever else we can do that's practical, and doesn't interfere with civil liberties.

Makes sense, doesn't it?
