I did not mean to insult any Southerners. Just speculating on the cold reality of what a split United States 150 years ago might look like today as it developed seperately. The fact that for many decades the industrial North has been carrying the burden of federal taxes with many Northern states net contributors and many Soutern states net receivers, and still does today to some extent (although with recent Southern prosperity and shifts in population this dynamic is changing over time) has certainly benefitted the South greatly.

The South would probably have not developed as quickly or as extensively if the two areas were not part of the same country. For example, the highway systems might have developed very differently in the different North/South countries, with less money available in the South to build and mainstain roads, the highway system might be a lot less modern and extensive than it is today, thus causing ripple effects on industry and development. And social changes such as unionization and civil rights, which had their roots in the North, would probably have little to no impact on an idependent Southern U.S.

There is no doubt that such a split would have had a profound impact on both the North and the South. As I see it the Southern conservatism has kept the United States from becoming another European style quasi-socialist society. It would make an excellent topic for a book.
