Microsoft's Allen, a noted philanthropist who helped fund SpaceShipOne, the first privately built craft to reach space, initiated the atlas project because of his longstanding fascination with neuroscience. Scientists announced that they have completed a genetic map of the mouse brain, which they hope will reveal new insights into brain function and disease. All the data from the Allen Brain Atlas is freely available online, as are powerful applications for sifting through the enormous amounts of information.
