As for the Pax Americana -- well, I suppose that the US could have let the Japanese take over the entire Pacific Rim, and you'd be bowing to the Emperor now. But what have we done for you lately? I live in a nice, quiet, peaceful neighborhood myself. I could pretend to myself that it's so peaceful because we're all such nice people that bad guys leave us alone. Or I could admit to myself that having a state police station half a mile away, and a local police station 4 miles away, and police cars patrolling around and on call 24/7/365 just might have something to do with it.
