I wouldn't say that Pakistan is retreating. Otherwise, I doubt that Musharraf would have come to the White House to meet with Bush & Karzai to talk about reform. I love the oversimplicity of Musharraf guised as intellect or deep understanding, but the guy seems like a natural ally of the US at this point. Any effort they can make to reform the madrasses would be good for the global crackdown on terrorism.

Karzai is steadfast in his support for US support. He is looking towards the economic aid to help rebuild his country. He is another great ally for the US in the war on terror against the Taliban in Afghanistan and the Pakistani border.

It may take years to eliminate the Taliban as a way of life in these areas. However, we are getting aggressive against the people that actively resist the governments of Pakistan or Afghanistan. If Taliban soldiers want to go straight and turn their weapons into Taliban, I support that level of negotiation 100%. I hardly see that as an indication that Pakistan is moving backward on the wot, despite the negative spin by the press.
