Strike notice at large B.C. Interior copper mine as contract talks falter

Canadian Press - Wednesday September 27, 2006

KAMLOOPS, B.C. (CP) - The United Steelworkers Union has served 72-hours' strike notice to Highland Valley Copper, Canada's largest copper mine southwest of Kamloops in the B.C. Interior.

Local 7619 president Richard Boyce says mediated talks didn't go well on Tuesday and the negotiations have been put on hold.

He says the company, owned and operated by Teck Cominco (TSX:TCK.A, TSX:TCK.B), "refused to put another offer on the table."

Boyce says mediator Vince Ready plans to call the two sides back to the bargaining table on Saturday "in the hopes of making one last-ditch effort at getting a deal and avoiding job action."

The union's current contract expires at midnight Saturday, and the almost 900 mine workers could walk out as early as Sunday.

Highland Valley Copper announced in 2005 it was investing $40 million to extend the life of the mine by about five years to 2013.
