If you compare the Mona Lisa's breast size in the painting to recently discovered medical documents, it indicates she must have been lactating. Using anti-weathering color analysis, you can also see small stains on her right shoulder which likely came from regurgitated milk. Cross-referencing the brightness of the daylight with normal baby sleep patterns as well as local maternal customs, one can also conclude the Mona Lisa's baby was sleeping in a cradle in Leonardo's studio while she was posing. Thus, her gaze and expression were likely the result of being fixated on her infant as he lay in his cradle.
