Besides latency a stable availability of required bandwidth (>= 2400 bps) is another major issue for telephony over Internet. If your connection stalls (stops delivering data) for even a moment, you loose sysnchronization needed for voice data comperssion/decompresion. The results then remind the battlefield communication with lots of gaps (waiting for data) and screaching sounds (decompressor getting in sync).

This is why telephony over X.25 is just satisfactory and current Internet telephony does not really work at all.

ATM might have the answer with the bandwidth reservation protocol. I wish to know how well would the Internet handle the situation with ATM (almost) end to end. The full connection load constitutes the moment (wish to say minutes or hours) of truth.
