I strongly prefer honesty to lies but I think its a bit strong to say that lies as the most despicable form of human conduct. "That dress looks good on you" isn't exactly on par with murder, rape, extreme torture, etc.

As for retaliation against a lie from the legal system? You can be charged with perjury, filing a false report, slander, libel, fraud...

But common every day lying ("You look good in that dress.", "I didn't take the last cookie", "Of course I've been faithful to you."), isn't ordinarily something that can be or should be punished by the legal system.
