CB, you missed the point. The point was contrary to what you assert, the USA does not look after NZ's "freedom" whether we like it or not. I cited East Timor as one example of what happens.

< the US is damned for not stopping Indonesia from annexing East Timor but we're also damned for meddling in the affairs of other countries?>

CB, you misunderstand. The USA [Kissinger] gave the green light for invasion and carnage in East Timor. Which is quite different from meddling in the affairs of other countries. Usually, it's internal affairs in which meddling is considered poor form. Outright invasion of one country by another is another matter altogether. You have confused the two.

If Australia announced an invasion and annexation of New Zealand, I doubt that the USA would demand they stop. On the contrary, I think they'd consider it a jolly good show. If China invaded New Zealand, I think we'd have freedom thrust upon us, even if a lot of New Zealanders thought a China takeover a good idea [which I'm sure they would since a lot of them people immigrated from there in recent years].

My point about the sheep quotas is that the USA is hypocritical. Not that I think they shouldn't have quotas if they like. But they should be aware that NZ won't just go out of business - China trade bloomed instead. Which is not good for the USA.

I happen to think import taxes are a good idea instead of internal taxes. Ideally, neither should be needed. But a step at a time.
