It's obvious one of the reasons the Mormons adopted polygamy was in order to quickly populate their narrow world at the time. It's possible to care for widows without insisting they must become someone's wife. Many cultures consider it a community's responsibility to care for orphans & widows.

If you're suggesting the men were never lured by the idea of creating harems for themselves, only those connected to the polygamous culture would agree. When the topic is introduced in mixed company, most men chuckle and admit it's one of their fantasies.

I'm amazed at the financial burden for each household. However, I remember reading somewhere that many of the excess wives and their children collect welfare checks. Are you aware if that's true?
