this is well worth looking at, especially in view of recent stock market performance:

right after i posted this i came across Bizarro's Tuesday 11:01 post about Newsweek presenting 'Losing Afghanistan' on its international edition cover and 'My Life in Pictures' by whatshername on its US edition cover.
well, ROFLOL. welcome to the Soviet Union of America - you're all reading the Pravda now ('Pravda' is Russian for 'truth' btw.).

Western audiences - not only in the US, but also elsewhere - hear very little about the ongoing strife in the purported 'success story' Afghanistan. however, what little information does come out doesn't look good at all. not only is opium/heroin production scaling fresh historic heights, but the occupation forces are constantly getting kicked in their teeth via roadside bombs and ambushes. similarly to Iraq, they react with bombardments, since Western battlefield superiority is mainly due to its air forces and losing lots of soldiers in battle isn't politically palatable. this in turn seems to create a steady stream of new enemies ripe for recruitment by the Taliban and other rebels. it remains to be mentioned that no occupation of Afghanistan has ever been crowned with success - not a single one. after a while , every occupation force simply got tired of the constant blood-letting in the middle of nowhere (most of Afghanistan looks like a pretty desolate desert). it's like camping in a nest of hornets - without ever quite knowing why one is doing it (there's nothing there, after all).
