[ Bell Canada/ Nortel ]

Basic questions... I've been reading some of the AMTX posts. They indicate that the ALA/AMTX solution/partnership was for the Bell Canada contract... Lets think about it.....

Why would Nortel who thinks ALA is one of it's main competitors for Central Office equipment use an ALA solution? Lets not forget that BC either owns Nortel or Nortel owns BC. I don't see BC using an ALA solution. Everything I've seen printed on the BC site indicates a CAP solution. They even go as far to indicate CAP may become a standard...

The current standard for ADSL technology has been defined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI -- T1E1.4) This is based on DMT technology (Discrete Multi-Tone). Existing products are based on CAP (Carrierless Amplitude Phase Modulation) line codes. It is possible that both DMT and CAP could become industry standards.

Nortel is also working on the QAM line code. The CAP RADSL ad-hoc group is currently working on a draft for a CAP/QAM standard. Most know that CAP/QAM will never interoperate with DMT so why go with a DMT solution. I could be wrong, but I see BC using a CAP solution.... until later.
