My family is filled with theologians from the heartland of America. I have been in hundreds of churches and taken several courses in Biblical studies and religious studies.
And all of our family and friends who are real Christians, and believe in charity, tolerance, peace, love, etc. are mortified by the religious right and their mega drive-in churches promoting far rightwing politics. To us, rightfully so, these rightwing fanatics are not real christians because they totally ignore Christ's top five lessons:
- Love thy neighbor as thyself
- Blessed are the peacemakers
- Give away your wealth to the poor or dont get into heaven
- Do unto others
- Be good shepherds and stewards
The rightwing believes in none of the above, or at least they don't practice it. Certsainly not the Falwells, Reeds and Robertsons.
There is also praise the Lord with all your heart. But The Lord, that is God, can never be defined by Man. God is the ultimate mystery.
One thing we know though, Jesus never preached abstinence, that sex is bad and sinful, that questioning corrupt politicians is a sin or that needless wars against other religions and political groups is a good thing. In fact Christ always turned the other cheek, even when on the cross. |
