I think we can end the original debate by agreeing there is likely some faint link between the Democratic left (but less so the DLC Democratic wing that won elections in the 1990's) and a market socialism lite kind of thinking. It is only "rooted in Marxism" in a six-degrees removed kind of way.

As for spending, one data point I recall is that Congressional spending under Reagan was almost exactly the sum total of what Reagan requested in his budget submissions. Small government has always been a myth for modern Republicans except in pet areas where their backers play a big role and want an unfettered playing field, as much as possible.

Is there any serious Republican candidate for 2008 who advocates seriously reducing the size of government? If not, is that just because the Republicans wouldn't nominate someone that far outside the mainstream now?
