Good post CB. Leadership is another factor. If you go back to US entry into WW2, you will find strong isolationist anti war sentiment. FDR became president in that environment and gradually prepared us for war. TG for Pearl Harbor because if that hadnt happened, we may have ultimately waited too long.
9/11 was Pearl Harbor in our time. Afganistan had 90%+ support. But the bush admin/neocons and folks like me either went off in the wrong direction or failed to understand what iraq entailed and whether the fruit was as low hanging as they thought. The example that iraq was going to be both for the efficiency of american power projection in the regions as well as for growth of democracy in the region, didnt materialize. And the bushies keep pushing the same stay the course message when it is very unclear as to what that course is or should be. FDR, bush was not, nor reagan who knew how to regroup and change course where necessary.
I think itchy is too itchy to blame the american people when this current quagmire has far more to do with misguided and/or incompetent leadership from the top down.
