You might want to stockpile enough food and water to get you through some difficulties, but the problem with such stockpiles is that you either have to use it, or lose it.

I use it and replace it. I am eating the food as it gets closer to it's best before date, but I only buy what is on sale, and I stock up. I even keep a couple months worth of dog food in the house. I will have enough beans for the winter, and I have 20 or 30 pounds of rice around. This week I am buying flour for bread. I am looking at a solar system to keep the freezer and fridge going.
