If they are fairing even slightly better than their comparator, they believe they are doing well. Likewise, if their similar other is doing better than they are, it irritates them. In this light, general well being becomes a non-issue.

No to me. I was talking about my own preferences. I care about how well I am doing, and I care about how well society is doing, but offer to increase my real wealth by 50% while increasing everyone else's in the country by 75% and I'll be happy to accept the offer.

There is no comparison between the 'poor' of this country and the poor of the sahara desert for example.

Quite true. Even the fairly well off the poorest countries are not in a number of ways more well off than someone on public assistance in the US. I remember reading a comparison of a doctor in one of the 5 poorest countries and a recipient of social security disability funds in the US. In many was they where financially similar (although the doctor had a lot more social respect and a sense of achievement). The doctor could have crossed the border to a wealthier (but still poor) country and probably have done financially better but he wanted to remain with the people he knew and do what he could to help them.
