"Congressman Accused Of Inappropriate E-Mails To Boy
ABC News Says South Florida Congressman Sent Page E-Mails

POSTED: 6:25 pm EDT September 28, 2006
UPDATED: 7:01 pm EDT September 28, 2006
MIAMI -- ABC News is reporting possible inappropriate behavior by a South Florida congressman.

The network said that Mark Foley of Lake Worth allegedly sent personal e-mails to a 16-year-old congressional page.

The main issue with the e-mails appears to be the age of the young man to whom Foley allegedly sent the e-mails. The boy is 16. Foley is 52.

Local 10's Michael Putney describes Foley as a popular and well-liked congressman who has served in Washington for the last 12 years.

The e-mails were allegedly sent to a congressional page who worked in Capitol Hill last summer. The page did not work directly for Foley, Putney said.

The name and hometown of the page have not been released.

The e-mails from Foley allegedly said:

"Did you have fun at your conference? … What do you want for your birthday coming up? … What stuff do you like to do?"

Another allegedly said:

"How are you weathering the hurricane? Are you safe? Send me an email pic of you as well …"

The page said he e-mailed back:

"Maybe it is just me being paranoid, but seriously, this freaked me out."

Local 10 put in a call to Foley and his chief of staff, but they have not yet returned the call.

His chief of staff did tell ABC News that the e-mails, which were allegedly sent on Foley's personal AOL account, were "entirely appropriate." She said their release is a smear campaign by his congressional opponent.

Foley is up for re-election on Nov. 7 in his Palm Beach County district.
