I don't have to read a book to know the history of the Mujahideen and the Taliban, over the years I've met, and talked with, a number of Mujahideen.
I've never met a more warlike, militant group of people. They don't like outsiders in their country, period, and they don't like each other, either.
But the tribal various factions (Pashtun, Hazara, Tajik, Uzbek, Baluchi, Turkmen, etc., etc., etc.) are willing to ally temporarily with anybody who will assist them.
Afghanistan is the paramount example of a place where the problems have no solutions, they can only be managed from day to day.
Giving up and letting the Taliban take over is not an option, at least not for Bush. If the country is stupid enough to elect someone like Kerry, that will no doubt change. |
