The Christian religion has also evolved with the times and with the modern world....

Not exactly: The visible church of the dark ages had no connection with the founding of the Christian faith by Jesus and as modeled by the early church. They suffered persecution without resorting to arms, but were commanded to "pray for those who persecute you, so you will prove yourselves sons of your Heavenly Father, who is kind to both the just and the unjust." This was reinforced by the early church fathers.

The change began when the true believers were overwhelmed by the sheer force of numbers of unbelievers who came in because of Constantine's edict. The growth of a visible militant church was really these pretenders operating under the Church's name. They even took official power for quite some time and are responsible for the atrocities such as the inquisition. The true believers was then a minority among those who called themselves Christians, just as it is today. For, Jesus had already said, "For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it."

There have never been 'many' Christians, for the cost is too great for the many, which is repentance from their beloved sins.
