The question is not spending or taxes, it's how much and where it's spent. If you listen to some conservatives, all they want to do is cut taxes and gov spending to zero to put us in utopia.

For example, the federal and state governments raised taxes to spend hundreds of billions on the interstate highway system. Was that wasted? Did it harm the economy? I don't think so.

Each program needs to be evaluated on it's merits, not on how it fits into some preconceived ideology.

Spending is the issue. If the government taxes money to spend, it takes it out of the private sector,
