That reaction formation idea looks like Stockholm Syndrome by another name = we are of course scared of the reaction of powerful people if they think we are not toeing the party line. Moslems line up like rows of iron filings, all pointing to Mecca. Christians all stand and sit and stand again and kneel and bow on order. I have been known to sing religious songs at school - where teachers seemed to enjoy thrashing recalcitrant pupils with canes.

Most of us learn young that we are not powerful and don't get much respect and either fight for it or hide our lack of power by agreement with those in power [even if only concealed or 'reaction formationed']. Since we don't want to spend our lives fighting every 10 seconds every time some other bully wishes to exert their power over us, with whole government departments with nothing to do all day but order us around, of course we are all keen on reaction formation, and Stockholm Syndrome.
