The Irish type of the Wheaten is a rough and tumble dog in that very strong, resistent to problems like cuts and all and tough as nails. The American type, the ones you are most likely to see, are from the original Irish stock but have been watered down through interbreeding to produce a double layer coat which until recently was preferred at dog shows. (I understand all American stock lineage can be traced back to only two animals, once owned by a lady in N.Y. that had an unusual coat and from which the current was bred). No one knows EXACTLY where the Wheaten came from, but its believed they were the dogs the Spanish had in the Armada that sank off of Ireland in the war with England, swam to shore in began breeding there. At one time all the Wheatens were located in only one area of Ireland. jdn
