"Viennese Quack".

It was "witch doctor", but the meaning is of course the same.

Nabokov would never use a word like "quack" if a great one like "witch doctor" was handy.

Nabokov was of course smart, but so was Freud. Nabokov had some quirks Freud would gave found very interesting.

Lolita was not his first nymphet. A long forgotten gem, Laughter in the Dark, introduced his first. Has one of the best first pages in fiction, IMO--"he loved, was not loved, and was ruined" or something like that.
