Maybe they prevented some crimes, at the same time they probably prevented some crimes from being deterred or stopped by the use of guns. The population of Australia, armed or not, isn't like Hezbollah. If you could disarm Hezbollah it would be a good thing, but disarming Hezbollah's targets would not be so good.
