That could get quite inconvenient --couldn't it?-- for someone who has an almost-worthless option and just decides to take the loss.

Well, maybe with electronic trading a big player can squeeze out a tiny profit. But if I have a profit of, say $25, I am not interested in buying or selling the underlying stock to close out the position.
