The reasons that the alcohol is denatured when it is produced would not be relevant if it's to be used in gasahol.

It's to make it unusable for consumption, because ethanol which is to be consumed is taxed at a much higher rate than otherwise. Think of it as a "sin tax," think of it as a revenue-raiser, it's both.

There's no scientific reason for doing it that way.
