An average single-family home uses 439 pounds of copper.

* In an average single-family home, you will find about:

195 pounds - building wire
151 pounds - plumbing tube, fillings, valves
24 pounds - plumbers' brass goods
47 pounds - built-in appliances
12 pounds - builders hardware
10 pounds - other wire and tube

Quite a few other interesting tidbits there as well.

Multiply that by the drop in building demand and you get a pretty darn big number. Then add in all the renovations of existing homes that are now completed and the loss of demand becomes staggering. It will be many years before demand returns to recent levels.
