Eventually its going to have to be able to survive without the subsidies. Well I suppose their could be a political will to keep them indefinitely but if it can't work without the subsidies than it seems to be rather inefficient. As oil becomes more expensive ethanol could play a larger role, but we can't produce enough ethanol to replace all the gasoline and diesel that we use.
