BERLIN -- A 25-year-old Turkish man was sentenced to life imprisonment by a German court Friday for murdering his sister in a so-called honor killing because she was in a relationship with a German.

The man, named as Ali K., killed his 20-year-old sister Gonul in June last year with shots to the head and stomach after he found out that she was romantically involved with a German man.

The court in the western city of Wiesbaden heard that nine days before she was murdered, Gonul had fled her family home and hid in a garden cabin belonging to her boyfriend's mother.

Her brother lured her to her death by saying that he wanted to talk to her while her boyfriend waited in a cafe. Ali K. fled the scene after the shooting but handed himself into police.

His defense claimed that he had lost control when he saw his sister because he thought that she had brought shame on her family.

Germany is home to about 2.5 million Turks and observers say that honor killing in Turkish families is a growing problem. Papatya, a Berlin-based organization that seeks to help young Turkish women, said that there were 45 known honor killings in Germany from 1996 to 2004.
