History channel just had an program on water and discussed the 'water wand' or 'center pivots' in Nebraska that create those huge circles of green you can see from Google Earth.

It takes 3 days for a pivot to make one complete circle to irrigate the farm. They are linked to wells that tap a huge aquifer under the central US that contains @ 1 quadrillion gallons of percolated water. It runs from South Dakota to New Mexico. They said it could cover the entire US 16 inches deep. They are saying that some parts of the aquifer in Nebraska have dropped about 30 feet, creating concern about the state's prodigious use of it.

The pivot was invented in 1952. 7000 center pivots are made per year and have been sold to over 100 nations since then.
