Deposit insurance can also be a bad idea since it can provide a false sense of security, etc. - its also an example of the beginnings of the US "nanny state".

A case can be made that bank runs clean the system of poorly and/or unethically run banks, and that not fully trusting banks is not a bad thing.
There is no amount of regulation or oversight that will guarantee a safe bank, or company or whatever.
